1973 22-2 Repower ideas
« on: October 05, 2016, 08:25:13 AM »
Hi all
i Have a 1973 22-2 in great shape. The Hull, cap, transom and floor are solid. I cut out a hatch in the floor in front of the transom to get access to the bilge (which was very clean) and installed a bait well pump and through hull fitting. Also put in a bilge pump. New coffin box custom built 70 gallon fuel tank also placed in old fuel tank location. Also put in a custom leaning post livewell.
It is powered with a well running 1992 Mercury 150 XR4. Im a looking to repower with a four stroke and am considering a yamaha f150. Its lightest in its class and very efficient.
Questions: is it enough power?
Is the old transom rated for its weight?
Di I go with a 20 or 25 inch shaft?
Any other ideas?
thx

1) Plenty of power, after all you have 150 hp now
2) Does the boat self bail with the current motor?  Moving weight forward can offset the extra weight of the 4-stroke. Batteries in console, shift fuel tank forward.
3) Transom height will dictate the length of the motor shaft, is the current motor 20"or 25"?
4) It's my understanding that the lightest 150 4S on the market is the new Mercury. If you go with the new Mercury you will save on the rigging.

I agree with Fernando's suggestion on the new Mercury.  Light motor and super quiet.  Also with a simple wire harness adapter you can use your existing rigging.

im third for the mercury, it's lighter than the yamaha by 25 lbs, and as others said, you can re use your rigging, just need a adapter plug. and it will be a good bit cheaper than the yamaha.
