245 Explorer sink upgrade
« on: November 20, 2014, 12:02:24 PM »
I would like to upgrade my 245 explorer to do away with the empty hole with the lid on it and fit it out with a small round sink and pump as the 250 Explorer has.
I need to know where they installed the water tank and where it drains.
I think currently the storage box has a drain hole in the bottom and just drains into the bilge.
Components I would assume would be available through West or one of the other suppliers?
Thanks. :bounce:

The sink was an option if you had the fresh water system on your 245 (BTW the 250 is the same boat as the 245 only with a different sticker).  It included the sink and the transom shower.  The tank is 8 gallons.

Here is the sink in my 245:

The tank is mounted on the port side behind this removable bulkhead:

You can see the sink drain here on the starbord side just forward of the storage box drain:

The tank fill and vent are on the port side gunwale cap.  You can see them here in this pic directly blow the 245.

To be honest I almost never use my sink.  I do use the transom shower though.  I'd personally like to have the storage space of the built in cooler over the sink.  There is a bunch of lost dead space in that area that I would love to find a way to use.

Bruce, be creative!  The "wings" of all cabin boats, regardless of size, are pretty much dead space.  Remove the close-out b/heads, and if you can finish them off (nothing but raw glass in there), they'd make great spots to stow fenders, PFDs, linens, pretty much anything you can think of.  You just have to watch heavy items, which can cause a list, being all the way outboard...

Bob I was thinking about putting in some kind of drawers or tilt out storage in the space under that sink.

I think you'll find little room due to the slope of the hull for storage under there.

CB is right, although the drawer bank can get progressively shallower the lower you go, I've seen it done many times in smaller cabin boats.  The key is assessing the space you have, then using it constructively...

Actually there's a ton of space in there. If I open up the storage space under the cushion you can see where the hull side and strInger is located.  The inside face alone is a big area. I'll  have to remove the sink panel one day to see what is in there. Perhaps the original poster can post a pic of inside that area.

I'll post a pic of my layout (which is identical in size). I have a sunken tray where your sink is and store several containers (and a roll of TP) in that spot. I had wanted to cut another access hatch facing port, below the tray with the thought of gaining more storage. It appeared to me that the gain wasn't worth the effort. Still, above the sloping hull and stringer (where your sink is now) does add some storage.

What's interesting is where your water tank is located. I'd like to see the tank itself and how it's mounted. I have played with the idea of plumbing a freshwater wash down and that sounds like a good place to mount the tank.

Here's my port side.

I took these before I replaced the fill and vent and relocated the antenna. Looked like a good spot to store contraband, as long as the Feds don't have a dog riding with them.

If you ever get a chance to post a pic, thanks.

I'm pretty certain my water tank sits on top of that "shelf" in your second pic.  Either that or you can put a square grouper in there!

CB,
Where is the first pic taken from? and what orientation?
And while I'm at it, why is your boat so clean  :alien:

OK then. I had tinkered with the idea of installing a tackle station in that area but the seat pedestal (and the actual seat itself) hampers access from the other side.

8 gals. isn't a lot but more than enough for several rinses for a shower or rod/reel wash down.

Thanks!

You can get bigger made - I had my 40 custom made and it was pretty cheap.

In the cabin, port side, looking aft. Both shots are from there, just different camera heights.

My concern would be the additional weight. I already have a port list while underway (thinking hook in hull from trailer) that I compensate with the tabs so I'm hesitant in installing an additional "Dave" that far out. 8-10 gals would be fine for me. I'm not in the habit of "carwashing" my boat while at sea as I've seen some folks do.
