22-2 mullet boat
« on: April 20, 2014, 01:11:06 PM »
Helping a buddy build his new boat. Upgrading from a 19-6 actually. This one was almost all original except for some crab pot hauling mods. Doing the transom first, then stringers will be cut down to increase fish hold depth, theyre well attached so going to dig the foam out, tab the inside and recap them. Big decks and ice boxes front and rear...

Outside skin was not salvageable

Formica dam set up

New outside skin laid up. 4x1708

1 1/2" coosa epoxied in

Anybody have a clue what this black "pipe" is?     Its original, has nothing on the outside going thru the bottom and is filled with what seems like resin

Looks like it's the base for a shoot-thru ducer.

I think youre onto something.     The whole keel area was balsa cored and it was total mush. Probably from the install of this thing. Ive never seen one like this, guess it got sheared off somehow...

Dirt, if you guys are not gonna mess with the hull in that area, cut the fitting off, grind it flat, call it a day...

My thoughts too. Not gonna try and get it all out. Its not rusting so its gonna get glassed over..

I think I know that 22-2.

Came from a crabber in Fort Myers i believe. He was selling it as a complete rig apparently, but he parted it out and my friend was able to get just the hull...

I got a feeling with the rebuilds that are going on right now, there will be several others joining Dirt's fraternity.

Moving right along as it appears my tutoring is working 8) ...    Inner transom skin laid up and stringers being cut down.  Took off 4.5" in the bow and 5" toward the stern.

Stringer extensions built on a dam just like the transom. Also tabbed the insides with 1708

The mush of balsa in the keel was replaced with a half section of 3" pvc, which is also the drain for the compartments to be built in the bow

Poured foam today, should have the stringers capped by the weekend

Very clean and nice. Did you do a heavy grind on the hull or a light scuff?

Everywhere were glassing to gets it pretty heavy. Flat enough to where theres no depressions left within the roving strands.  The owner got bored one day and went over the whole thing lightly though...

And went home itching and told his wife, "Honey, I'm a boat builder!"

Dirt, beautiful work as always. Interesting, lowering the stringers for fish hold capacity. Especially when the recreational user raises them for self-bailing ability.

So...you bury the boxes...then from the forward fish box back, the console area, etc.  into the rear cockpit...that deck area is raised to self bail...is that the thinking?
