I just put a 1000gph pump in mine.  Small, cartridge is replaceable and it has the float switch built in.  The pump has 3 wires - 1+, 1 - and 1 to a switch.  There are plenty of examples of how to wire them on the web.

Sure - it's a Johnson pump 1000gph - nice and small and has an electronic float switch with it. You can replace the pump cartridge without changing everything.

Seems they are not making the 1000gph any more per the parent company website but I found one here - doesn't seem to have the included switch mine came with.

You'll need some kind of float or electronic switch, that way they operate automatically.  If you look at the bottom of the page on the link I poster it has the electronic ones.
