Starting Issue-Merc 2 Stroke
« on: July 11, 2017, 12:08:17 AM »
Hi All,

I have an issue I think is really simple, I just need to know what to check.   I have a Merc 115 2 stroke.

My starter intermittently just clicks when I turn the key.  It makes the sound that it would make if the engine was not in neutral.  After playing around with it, putting it in and out of gear, or neutral throttled up up, I can get it to turn over and start.  It has gotten to be a consistent issue, but I can always get it to start with a little messing around.  My complete starter was replaced two seasons ago, so I don't think it's the starter.  It seems to be as thought the engine won't turn over because it's not recognizing the engine is in neutral.

Is there something I can check or lubricate, before calling the mechanic?

A clicking sound from the starter can be heard when the battery is dead or near dying.  Meter test the charge of your starter battery.  Should be 12.75v.  If good charge, test the ignition key switch wiring for 12v.  If all good, volt drop test the battery cables from terminal to starter.  Need 12v each way for consistent ignition.

When yamaha engines, when the ignition key switch is turned while control lever is in gear there is no sound, no nothing.  I would assume Merc is the same, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the reply.  Often times it's the simple things I overlook.  I have a dual battery setup, I replaced one a few years ago (don't think it was the starter) and the starter has been in my boat for at least six years.  That very well may be it, I'll start there.  Cheers
