Steering cable
« on: July 24, 2016, 04:29:54 PM »
Gentlemen, am I correct in assuming from the threads that in order to clean and lube  the engine end of the steering cable the motor must be moved?  The boat is a '89 175 with a 75 hp Mariner.  Oh, I hope I am so wrong in my conclusion.

Sometime to try - you can loosen up the engine mounting bolts and get enough wiggle room to get the cable out.

Sadly the answer is not what you are going to want to hear, but yes. You have to remove the motor to take the cable out. Sometimes they have a little play where you can loosen the nut on the starboard side and pull it out enough to put grease on the rod and in the tube on the port side. Good luck.

I was hesitant to go with RickK's suggestion as to loosening motor mounts because I obviously don't have his skill set. I had already done what you suggested, and  got rid of some of the petrified lubricant.  Relubed as best  I could and put it all back together.  At least it's not any worse than before.

Is it safe to assume that the same process (motor removal) is required if one wants to install a hydraulic steering system?
