They have been doing that for years. Lower hp than usual Optis. Not much heavier. Part of the navy's single fuel requirement to phase out all gasoline on ships.

I was under the impression that you could already buy one? There's a guide on the west coast that had a pair of them on a 256 dusky?

Mercury offers diesel outdrives in 115-370 HP models, but the outboard diesel model is not currently available to the public.  You might - maybe find one as military surplus, and there's a chance a few might get sold as commercial mules for testing.
