I think a 222 CCP would be under powered with a 150. The reason is that hull has a very deep forefoot entry. I had a 200XF which is the walk around version of the 200 CCP powered by a 200HP 2.5L Merc. That was a nice power match for the hull.

It probably depends a bit on which 150 you are looking at - the deep-V hull on the CCP needs some grunt to get up on a plane.  A 2 stroke 150 usually will make more torque than a 4 stroke 150 and might be OK.  You won't be setting speed records, but it will get the job done.  The 22 foot CCP is very nicely suited to a 200.  Remember the old saying "there's no replacement for displacement."  Some 150 outboard motors are at the top of the rating for the engine size and just barely make 150.  Others are at the lower end and easily make 150 - with the same block making 175 or 200 in other models.

For example, the old Mercury V6 outboards were 2.0 liter for 150 and 2.4 or 2.5 for the 200.  The 150 was near the top of the 2 liter block - it was also sold as a 135.  The 2.4/2.5 engines pulled much stronger than the 2 liter.  Mercury now makes a 3 liter 150 4-stroke that is getting good reviews, and with 3 liters of displacement, should work well on a 22 CCP.  But you can still get the 2.5 liter 150/175 in 2 stroke, or jump up to the 3 liter 2 stroke XS or Optimax that are rated at 200 to 250.

Would a 150 do OK on a 22 foot CCP - yes.   :?  Would you be happier with a 200?  Yes!   :great02:  The 150 will struggle on that boat with full tanks and a 3-4 large humans on board.  A large-displacement 200 will handle it with ease.  You will get around OK with the 150, but you can haul ass with a 200, and I've never seen a guy hauling ass that did not have a smile on his face.

I just repowered my 22-2CCP.  I considered various models, 2 and 4 stroke, along with weight.  I considered the new 4 stroke 200 Suzuki 200 - it's a 4 cylinder engine that is getting a lot of power out of the 2.9 liter engine that is used on their 150 and 175.  2.9 liters is very big for a 4 cylinder engine and internal balance becomes a problem when you go much over 2 liters with an inline 4.  I decided against the Zuki because it is struggling to get 200 out of that block and both Zuki and Yamaha have been plagued with corrosion issues over the past few years.

I decided to go with a new 200 Merc Optimax 3.0 liter V6.  The same engine is sold as a 200 or 250 - the 200 is just rev limited to 5750 whereas the 250 runs up to 6000 to get the last 50HP.  I will say the 200 Optimax runs great on the 22-2CCP - it jumps out of the hole and has amazing torque!  There is a big difference between the 2.4/2.5 liter V6 that was rated at 200 and the new 200 horse 3 liter Optimax - "there's no replacement for displacement."

I'll let you know. I just put a Yamaha F150 on mine. I personally could care less about hole shot and am more interested in toodling along comfortably, quietly, reliably  and efficiently at 22 knots for a hour at a time.

Awesome...I am curious to see how it pans out.

I'm considering a 3L Merc 150 4 stroke replacement for the 1982 2.4L Merc 200 2 stroke for my 1978 222CCP.   I am a life long Merc fan but want to stay away from the high tech supercharged 4 stroke verado's, which leaves the 150 as the largest displacement and highest HP of the un-supercharged models.   Will keep you posted.

Check out the Optimax at 200 or 250!  Also, I think Mercury is still offering free 5-year warranty on Optimax, Verado, and 4 strokes.  Also, unless you want to pay big bucks for new controls and instruments, make sure your new motor is compatible with your existing setup.

Well I finally got to MA for my annual USA fix and got to take the new(ish) Yamaha F150 on my 22-2 out for a spin. It's perfect for my needs. Hole shot is fine. Cruises at 24 knots and WOT I saw over 34 knots between swells (Jose remnants) with 50 gallons of gas on board & two adults. Oh, Stupid quiet too. Couldn't be happier.

Those stats look great Woodeneye.  Does your CCP still have a T top?  I'm leaning toward the Zuke four stroke 200 on my 200 CCP, just because it weighs the same as the 150, but your numbers seem just fine.

Yep. I have a Tee Top. Had a go at getting out of Westport Harbour yesterday and found it a tad hairy with the swell & breaking waves left over from Jose & Maria. Once clear of the entrance I reassessed once I saw a fog bank rolling in and didn't fancy trying to reenter the harbour later in the day against a ebb tide in the fog, so I headed back in.

Let's just say that I'm mighty glad I had the grunt & responsiveness  of the new motor, It made it easier playing the throttle to stay between waves reentering the harbour. Could have been ugly and no fish is worth that kind of danger. The motor is a winner.
