Power trim/tilt operation
« on: June 12, 2019, 08:43:46 PM »
Hey all,

Quick power trim and tilt question. Happened to find a free 1990 Johnson parts motor out front of my neighbors house so of course I snagged it being all the same parts as my rude 88 spl. Even had the power trim unit!! So painted it up, replaced the motor and stripped bypass screw and it’s running! I’m just a complete newbie to power trim
And I’m not sure if it’s running correctly. In both directions, the trim rams go in and out ONE AT A TIME, then the tilt rod starts going. Is this normal? It’s also sounds perfect going down but a little scratchy going up....I feel like I’ve bled it completely but there may still be some air in there? Appreciate any insight.

Cheers!

Tilt rods go up together to extension then single ram piston raises.  Same process going down but in reverse sequence.  If one rod raises at a time its bc the rods aren't under load, assuming you're seeing this when testing unit.

Dab some grease on the contact point where rods touch mid section.

...nornal to have air in system.  If you opened reservior then after closing it just needs to be pressurized.

Thanks Jason! Yes should have mentioned I observed this while bench testing holding leads directly to a battery. Not under load. I do plan to grease the contact points after installation on my 170.

Just realized my 1990 88 spl has a 3 wire harness coming from the remote box. But the trim motor is a later 2 wire model.  I do not see a relay box on the motor with any relays either. Does this mean I need some type a conversion kit to go from 3 to 2 wire system? Any insight is much appreciated since I am new to power trim again  Cheers

Trim unit is standard 2 wires...power and ground.  And the remote switch in lever arm is 2 wires.  Possible that 3rd connection is used for other purpose?  I dunno, I'm only familiar w/yam wiring.  Take 2 jumper wires and multimeter.  Start by attaching one end to what you believe is the remote power wire, the other end of jumper to meter.  Other jumper to what you believe is ground, attaching other end of jumper to known ground.  At some point you'll determine what needs to be connected to what, and the 3rd plug will be ruled out.

Thanks Jason.  I figured out my motor was missing the relay box because the 88 specials didn’t come with power tilt and trim. But that part motor I found had it! All wired up and operational now.  Took a sawzall and sledgehammer to get the old unit out Lol. Cheers!!
