1/4" diameter holes thru 1/4" thick fiberglass- fill
« on: November 13, 2011, 06:26:56 PM »
Have a bunch of approx 1/4" diameter holes thru 1/4" thick fiberglass on a "verticle" surface that I need to fill before Gel-Coat, looking any easy suggest.I know Water resistant filler will "fill" but  fraid it might "pop-out" down the road, Iam no "glass expert" but can get by
Thanks

I'd go with either Bondo-glass (basically Duraglass) or MarineTex.  Tape off the back sides of the holes, fill, DA flush, fill in any air voids, DA flush again, re-gel, DA and buff...

Bondo-glass is $12 a quart at Wally World.  We used Duraglass at WC/AS, same stuff...

What Seabob suggests is perfect but I would go one step further and hit the holes just a tad with a countersink bit.  The chamfered edges will help prevent cracking and help prevent your filler from popping out.

Wing, you are correct.  And, to go one step further, when installing hardware and equipment in smooth gel, c/sink your screw holes.  Gel won't chip out when you drive the screw in...

SeaBob,

I am waising my scuppers, is this the best way to fill the holes? Or should I glass the backs?

Fletch,

Considering the size and location of the scupper drain holes, I'd use 2 layers of 24 oz. on the back sides, then as described above.  I really like the Bondo-glass as it has short strand glass in it...
