1970 flat back rebuild
« on: January 03, 2015, 09:04:27 AM »
So I have been on this site for a few years reading all of your impressive rebuilds and I am finally ready to get to work on my flattie. The goal is to close in the transom and now that I have the deck stripped it's painfully obvious that the deck needs to be reaced. As this will be my first attempt at this type of resto I am hesitant but will most likely be on here asking a lot of questions. The first (of many to come) is how far off the funnel should I cut the deck for removal as I know I want to leave a lip there? Also the best way to remove the casting deck. Thank you all for any advice you can give as I'm sure I will need all the help I can get.

Howdy Bill, IMO 1 1/2 - 2 inches should do the trick.  Good luck and post photos.  :icon_salut:

Ditto on what Nando said.  A sawzall with a long agressive blade can be a good tool for the casting deck removal.  Just make sure you know where the blade is at all times :icon_thumleft:

So I pulled the condone and everything off the deck and just as I suspected the deck itself squeezed out water. I have pics on my profile but am still trying to post on this thread. Within the next few days I will be cutting the deck and fishing platform. What is the best tool to open up the transom? I'm excited and scared to death about all this work I'm making for myself but it's clear if had to be done haha

How are you going to do the transom?  Poured or composite/wood.  If you do the poured you'll want to save the inside side skin.  If you are replacing the transom with composite or wood a skill saw is good to score it deep and then an air chisel is great to peel it out.

If not pouring and are going with composite or wood be sure and leave the outside skin as there is a lot of strength in the corners.

You're gettin' the hang of it.

Post up some more showing the progression. Moving from the Gallery to here is easy enough.

Good luck! :13:

Ditto on what Gran said

I guess they built it up to support the forward storage box that you took out - one way to do it I guess.
