Soft spot in floor fix??
« on: October 12, 2010, 07:57:55 AM »
I have a 1998 205 Osprey that has a small soft spot in the floor. It was there when I bought the boat in 08. Other than that spot the boat is really solid. Should I let it go or try and fix it? If it REALLY needs to be repaired what is the best way to go about it? Here is a picture showing the where the spot is.

Hey reeltimewes,

Sometimes I think we confuse soft spots with floor delamination from the top of the stringer. The floor may be perfectly fine but the adhesive bonding material has separated and the floor breathes a little bit in one area. I thought I had a soft spot in an area of the floor right on top of the stringer. When the sun was beating down on the floor and got hot I would get the "soft spot". When it cooled off it would go away! Your soft spot looks to be on top of the stringer like mine is. If the spot is not in any danger of cracking; let it go. The fix will cause more damage than the issue. Replace the floor when it needs it. I really havent seen a patch repair job that didnt look like a patch repair job!Ugly! Forget about matching 10+ year gelcoat!!

Looks like you can reach that spot from the hatch in front of the seat? You might stick your head under there and see if the issue is the bond between the deck and the stringer. Thats an easy fix if you can get to it from the hatch

Ok I took a look from inside the front hatch and also from the hatch in the floor just in front of the console. I guess it could be separation from the deck to the stringers but hard to see the stringers. I can see a line of goop running from front to back which I assume is the bonding adhesive. What type of stuff would you use to inject back in there to tighten thing up again?

I'll have to consult my engineer (neighbor   ) and get back with you, I'm sure some on here have suggestions?

Good thinking. Looks like a good product for the cure, inexpensive too. Let it set up/cure for eight minutes or so....then weigh it down from the deck above.

Check for moisture first; probably the reason the bond failed to start with. If needed, put a warm lamp under there. But monitor it closely. Good job to do on your day off. Dry it out, but don't get her too hot...be safe.
