Hi all,

I am repowering my 1974 19'6" and was pretty set on the Suzuki 140HP. Someone said to me that I should just go with the 150HP if I am considering the 140 but I have a few concerns with that-

Weight is always an issue with our vessels and the Suzuki 150HP weights 511lbs. The Suzuki 140HP weights about 396lbs so there is quite a difference. Plus I plan on having a jack plate as well.

Thanks for any input and experiences you can share.

I have a c115 yamaha on a 1973 19.6 all original and it will bust 40mph full fuel me wife daughter and big full cooler.  Less is more especially if you r not pishing a t-top.  I find i never can go more than low twenties unless its slick calm.  If i ever have to repower it will be a 90 unless i decide to put more structure in the wind.  Would love to have the brass tubes in scuppers out of the water... right now depending on fuel they are 1/4 to 3/4 underwater.

If the boat is all original it will be very sensitive to additional weight on the transom and the scuppers more than likely underwater. If you have intentions of rebuilding the boat in the future then I recommend the 150. You may want to consider the new Mercury 150, the 25" shaft weighs in at 470 lbs.

Intentions are to keep it fairly original- New Floor and gas tank going in the belly next year but that's about it.

I suggest you take a hard look at the four cylinder Mercury 150 four stroke. Very good engine with lots of power. A member repowered from a 200 two stroke to the 150 four stroke and I'm very impressed with the power. Plus very little break in and way less maintenance. And at 455 lbs its pretty light considering the massist 3.0L displacement. Also 150 is the minimum hp for that hull if you ask me.

im a third that will recommend the mercury 150 four stroke. mine came off of a charter boat, and now has over 2800 hrs, and shows no major or alarming history on the computer. also passed a compression and cylinder leak-down test at 2700 hrs

Well I can say that I am definitely looking at the Merc 150- In addition to the above 3 comments 3 other people have suggested that engine as well. Maintenance and warranty are a big part of my decision making and truthfully I have heard a couple horror stories from Suzuki owners regarding the Suzuki warranty.

Thanks much for the advice and help

Jesse M had a DF140 on his 19-6 and loved it.  It seemed like a good match of power, not too much weight, quiet, and good fuel economy.  Most Zuki owners I know are happy as long as they don't need parts - it can take a while to get parts ordered.

Seems like engine weight is a top concern for you.   Though Suzuki makes one of the heaviest f150's on the market.  If you stick with going with a 150hp from merc, yam, evinrude, you'll have more options since their weights are all similar.

couple thoughts- if you want 150hp, I would go with the mercury as others have suggested- plenty of power, good weight, economy, reliability.

I have a 22-2 with a tower and run a 150 Yamaha 2stroke. it is plenty of power for the 22-2, so I cant help but think it would be great on a 19-6.  but- saving the 100+ lbs by going with the 140 would be very beneficial to your scupper situation*.

*having said that- you mentioned eventually redoing your floor- if you went with the heavier 150 zuke- why not raise your floor at that time to bring your scuppers up a few inches.

on the Suzuki 150- my understanding is that the 150 and 175 are basically the same motor with a few tweeks and maybe 10lbs difference,,, so think of your 150 as more of a 175 (as far as weight)... might give you a better/different perspective when rationalizing why your first instinct of going with the 140 would be the better choice for that boat (if you are stuck on the Suzukis)....

read the posts from Blue and Aswaff- both have had great experiences with the 4stroke 150 merc... could be the happy medium for you in everything you are looking for- 150hp, acceptable weight, reliability, and I know from Blue's rigging experience- it was pretty darn "easy"

I can tell you rigging that Mercury 150 was easy. It would have been easier if we pulled everything we needed  thru the rigging tube the first time it would have been even easier!

It seems you never got an answer. Did you go with the 140?  I'm considering the same. Let me rephrase, I am going with a white 140 with a 25" shaft. I'll. Try and update with my thoughts. Currently have a 1996 Johnson 150, which is very powerful. Hull shot like no body's business, but loud, smoky, and I'm looking for less maintenance and better fuel economy.
I'll keep you posted.

Take a peek at a Etec 150.  Can use your existing rigging etc. and they have the LEAST maintenance of any outboard with zero smoke and probably a 30-40% fuel savings over your current motor.

A white 140 Suzuki is being installed as we speak. I'll keep yall posted. Not sure what prop to go with. Had a 21 pitch on the 150. Any suggestions from someone who has the same setup?

Make sure you post some performance numbers with that setup. Until someone makes a 150 in a 400lb weight, this motor seems like a good fit on an unmodified 19'6.
