Scotty's 1963 36' Hatteras Convertible Re-furb
« on: November 06, 2013, 11:46:46 AM »
Our good friend and brother Scott Rhodes (AKA gran398, Scotty, Bro, etc.) has had this 1963 Hatteras 36 Convertible for quite some time now...sitting there collecting dust, collecting critters ( ), collecting ridiculous storage fees, in short, just waiting for the right opportunity.

Well, that opportunity has come.  Scotty's old partner (basically a d-bag) finally got some sense in him and walked away from what was costing Scott a bit of money (and the old partner not doing squat!), and Scotty has a new partner with the smarts, the facility, the equipment and materials, to get ner back on her hull bottom and off the hard!

So here are the pics Scotty sent me a couple years ago, as we were trying to sell her, both on THT and locally down here in Tampa.  No dice, so we basically forgot about that...which, as it's turning out, was a good thing!

Great job Bob, thank you very much!!

We will be moving her from the "boat graveyard" as my lovely wife calls it to my new partner's boatyard to begin the resurrection. This will be by December 1.

Pics of the move to follow.

Thanks again SB!

Down below...

Cockpit...

Pretty sure those gassers are 7.4L, so their output should be 330HP per.  660 HP on a boat this size should do her fine.  Yes, she will suck some fuel, but Scott knows that.  What John said about dropping a couple of used Cummins in there is definitely appealing.

My pleasure Scotty!  Now I'm sure you will get PLENTY of suggestions from the peanut gallery here on how to spend your money!!

Assuming the propulsion and running gear are up to snuff, my first plan of attack would be to update the cabin areas, and new electronics...

I think all of us have a soft spot in our hearts for mid-size covertibles/small sporty's...I know I do!  The big boat look in a manageable (and MUCH more affordable!) size.  And obviously the cockpit on this boat has the room for several guys to do some serious fishing.  I know in Scott's area, they don't have to run 100 miles plus to get into some serious offshore action, so the smaller range of the gas motors is not a deal breaker,,,

Speaking of fuel capacity, when we changed out the bad tanks, we went with the biggest that would fit. The yellowfin grounds are 60 -75 miles offshore, so wanted plenty of fuel.

The new twin tanks hold 207 gallons each, 414 total.

Scotty, you mentioned genset.  Should be a relative piece of cake to install.  I'd consider the Westerbeke 5KW models, you may even be able to get by with the 3KW, just have to watch your loads.

When was the last time you ran shorepower to her?  It will be interesting to see what works, what doesn't.  I see you have AC (cold air return grill), hopefully that's working.  If you want to test it on the hard, just pull off the lid of the strainer and put a hose in it...

Bob, she has a Westerbeke now, but has carb issues.

The A/C hasn't been cranked in years. Gonna need it...that cabin gets HOT.

She's on shorepower now, everything works great there. Gonna be nice to get it out of the graveyard, the blowboaters are bad for unplugging your cords and plugging in their chit.

Excellent on the genset Scott.  When you have it serviced, have the tech go over the whole system, particularly the condition of the exhaust, the intake hose and strainer, and the 120VAC output.

In that one pic down below, it looks like a MarineAir control panel above the cold air return.  That's good, parts and service for them are everywhere, may just need a refrigerant charge.

Have you got 1 shore inlet or 2?  Typically on boats that size, when the boat doesn't get AC, the builder will just install (1) 30A shore inlet.  With AC, they'll install (2), as the kick-in amperage of the compressor will hit about 22A, and if you have anything else on at the time (stove or microwave), the compressor kicking in will trip the breaker...so we wire the AC to the second shore inlet...

Yeah Jon, bigger boats take a few $$ to run.  At Proline, our 35 Express, triple O/B (usually triple 300 Vrods) had a standard tankage of 400 gals. with an option of a bigger tank, 450 gals.  We had several dealers that told us they couldn't sell to some customers because they wanted more fuel.

May seem like a lot, but, assuming one uses 2/3 of the fuel (the 1/3 rule, 1/3 to get out and troll, 1/3 to get back, 1/3 in reserve), you'd be looking at around 270 gal per trip.  If you have 4 buddies (helmsman, 4 fishing/mating/gaffing/wireman), split the cost and at $4/gal, you're looking at a little over $200/man.  Not too bad, considering what you are doing...heading out to get some big eye, blackfin...

we've been doing $150-300/each on the contender, which is about $600 at my cost on fuel... gets us about 160 gallons
