222 Battery Location
« on: February 20, 2018, 09:32:21 AM »
I just bought a 222 about a month ago.   It's a fully functional boat, but it has some issues that i'm trying to tackle before spring season really heats up.

My issue today is the battery location.   The boat has a center console, electronics box in t-top, and a full tower.   The guy i bought the boat from was a full time charter captain and more into fishing that clean wiring.   Basically i've got a rats nest that starts in the console and runs through tubes up to the tower.  In addition, there's a 36v trolling motors with 3 batteries in the floor just in front of the console.  But the location of those batteries has me thinking because that storage well is very large and could easily handle more batteries.   There are 4 additional batteries in the console - 2 starting and two deep cycles.   I think this is a little crazy.  Not only is it a TON of weight, but it takes up space.   I'd love to have that console be a wide open storage compartment.

My questions are these:
1.  Where do most people put their starting/house batteries on the 222?
2.  Is it safe to put 5 or 6 in the hole forward of the console?  In other words, do you think there's a enough below deck ventilation?

Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard MB.
I'm having a hard time visualizing the large storage space in front of the console in the floor.  That is not standard in the Osprey line.  Can you post a pic of this area please?

Thank you!

I'll post a pic as soon as i get my boat back.  It's in the shop right now - stupid suzuki gauge is acting up.

I wonder though - maybe that compartment was added later.  It's in front of the console forward seat and behind the casting deck(inboard of the stringers).

The old Flatbacks had a baitwell there - maybe someone figured the space could still be used on the 12 degree model.

Ok, here's what the box looks like.   It's about 30 inches in length, so it will accommodate three more batteries.  There's a drain hole in the back of the box that i was able to drill out to see how the box was constructed.  It's 1/2 inch nidacore and glassed to the stringers.  so as far as weight is concerned, putting 6 batteries in there should be ok.

I also read some some general marine battery questions on other forums.   It sounds like there's usually 2 main concerns.
1. Batteries in the bilge could become submerged.  I'm not worried about that, and truth be told, a submerged battery still works.
2.  Arcing/sparking in a bilge with a below deck fuel tank.   My tank is new, but it is a good point.  After some more digging, it seems like battery boxes are used by numerous manufactures to limit/eliminate this exposure(apparently all Parkers come from the factory with batteries rigged in the bilge near the fuel tank).

Long story short, i'm putting six batteries below deck.   I'll be using a Blue Sea "add a battery" system, keeping one battery a starting battery, and then paralleling two batteries for house.   The three other batteries in series are for the trolling motor only.

That's unique. Almost looks factory but I don't think it was an option. Where is your fuel tank? In the early models it was inside the console. Looks like the standard tank size was 60 gal.

The set up looked original to me, so i just figured it was an original option.  But once i realized it was nidacore it became pretty clear that someone put this in when they rebuilt the boat.  The forward part of the fuel tank is even with the front of the console, not the front of the console seat.    I'm not sure on the fuel tank size.   The fuel gauge is inop, and when i got the boat I put in 30 gallons before it was full.
