130hp ETEC on 200 Osprey?
« on: June 20, 2017, 07:30:36 PM »
I have an option to buy a 2012 130 hp ETEC with less than 50 hours (all freshwater) for $5k and am wondering if that's a good fit -- or overkill weight or power-wise -- for my 1999 200 Osprey. I have a 115hp 1999 Johnson two stroke on it now, and that is plenty fast. At least when it's running ok...which it is now after $6k in repairs. But I just don't have the confidence in that outboard and ran across this ETEC. And I figure it would be an easy rigging conversion since they are both "OMC"? I welcome any thoughts.

The Etec will connect directly up to your existing rigging (mws). You need at the very least a system check gauge and alarm.

The 130 Etec is a very good power match and weight for your 200 Osprey. You'll go faster and burn less fuel.

That's what I was hoping to hear, Wingtime. Thanks, as usual, for your ongoing help. The owner has had it for sale at a local marina shop for $8k for three months, and said if it wasn't gone by July 10 he'd sell it to me for $5k, which appears to be a really good deal.

Make sure you get a full engine report.  This will give you the total number of hours, hours at certain RPM ranges, temperature graphs for each head and EMM, number of start cycles, fault code history and more. Better yet see the motor run on the stand with the Evinrude diagnostic software connected up.  You can look for active faults, and test the injectors, ignition, fuel pump, oil injection pump and more.  I would not even consider buying a modern outboard without a report.  ANY dealer should know this.  Also believe it or not these engine have firmware updates now and then.  So you want to make sure the engine has the latest updates applied to it.

Yea get a print out make sure it hasn't been ran hot and or hard.
I think you'll be VERY pleased if you like the 115 you already have.
