Won't trim up
« on: September 26, 2016, 12:04:07 PM »
I have a 130HP jOHNSON. Trims down fine just won't trim up by the switch on the side of the engine or by the switch on the dash. Battery is good can't see any bad wires. Thought??

Try swapping the relays and see if the problem reverses itself.  If so, replace the bad relay.  It's a common problem.

This just happened to my 90hp Evinrude Ocean Pro. Would go down but not up. Swapped relays and then it would go up not down.

They are a common "ice cube" relay. Pull one out and take it to your local auto parts store. I picked up two at O' reily's auto parts.

Thanks for the help. Ok I got it to trim down, I dont know, I just hit the switch and it worked. NOW I trimmed to high and it wont go down. I hear they relay clicking and have good power. Did I go too high and lock it internally some how??

You can't trim it to high. Just because you hear the relay click doesn't mean it's good. Switch the relays and see if it trims down. You may just have a bad trim switch that is randomly working. Are you trimming it with the trim switch on the side of the engine pan or the switch up on the shift lever?

I'm trimming at both locations. I'll try switching relays.

My engine got stuck at the top too - I was low on hydraulic fluid.  Check that.

Is the pump coming on or just the relay clicking?

Mine were just clicking... contacts inside go bad or get carbon build up on them.

Pump is working. I'm going to turn the manual screw on the side that my wife found (hanging my head in shame) hopefully that works.

Don't forget to check the fluid level - mine went down after I topped it off.

Ok I put the new relay in and nothing. Took 1 of the two originals and put that in and it worked. So I have two original relays and 1 works. The new one when tested on a meter shows it is working but when plugged in it does not. I'm at my witts end. Fluid is fine, motor works fine, no bad wires..........

So the original works in both spots? If so, the new relay might be a wrong model? I know, sounds like a stretch but why would one work in both and not the new one?
