Refurbish 1981 200 CCP
« on: February 07, 2007, 08:32:04 PM »
Just wanted to start a little thread as I fix up the 200 CCP.  Took a couple of pictures of the inside and will post in the next day.  My first and dumb question  is I am trying to remove the original pedestal seats to remove the hatch over the gas tank.  I have removed all the bolts and the seats won't budge :? I have gone as far as tapping with a sledge hammer and the pedestals won't move :? Is there anything I am missing?  It feels like to me that there has to be another bolt holding it but the only place that could be is in the shaft that the seats sit on.  I will post the pictures in the morning, but if someone knows how to remove them please let me know.  Thanks,

If all the bolts are out, only thing that occurs to me is they may have been beded in 5200.  If they were, there's no graceful way of moving them short of pulling like he!! side to side.  A gentle & careful application of heat from your propane torch around the perimeter of the pedestal base may soften the 5200 some.  5200 is tenacious stuff so you may wind up pulling a bit of deck skin away from the core by the time you're done but that's easily repaired.

What kind of seat base?  My pedestal seats had a 3/4" thick flat aluminum base which bolted to the deck.  Then the pedestal bolted to the base.  Mine was grown together with corrosion between the two aluminum pieces and took some effort to separate.  Then the base plate was put down with 5200 or something which pulled gelcoat off the deck after I started them coming with a chisel.

5200 is both wonderful & horrible.

I swear that stuff is alive.  You can be as careful as can be, wipe everything off using clean rags, go in the house to get a drink, go back outside to do some more work and the wife comes out yelling that you got some kind of white s**t all over the kitchen.  I think when you walk by uncured 5200 it just jumps out on you when you are not looking.  Anti-seize compound is the same way.

Thanks for all the input.  You guys must be right.  It must be bonded to the deck  I think the screws would have done the trick.  Would you happen to know anything I could manage to get under the pedestal to loosten that mess up :?: I tried for 30 minutes tugging and banging with a sledge hammer and the pedestal would not move

Here are just a couple of pictures of the interior

And here are the pedestal seats that I cant break loose from the deck

Any more suggestions on the pedestal seats would be great.  I hate to tear up the deck skin because it is in good shape.  Thanks

I would try to get some wire under it.  Try to pull the wire through to cut the sealant.

The boat looks like its been well taken care of  :)

Thanks for the suggestion Shine  It seems like something as easy as removing the seats, turns into a nightmare for me.

The center hatch could wait a couple of more seasons because the only place it is soft is behind the seats.  The gas tank is my main concern.  Looking in thru the access hatch reveals moisture and bad corrosion to the point it is hard to find the surface of the tank without clearing debris away.  A part of me tells me to leave it alone until I smell gas and have a problem, then another part of me says bite it and pull the tank to see what I have :? What do you think :?:

Put a 6' iron pipe down the pedestal tubes to gain leverage and put your shoulder to it... they'll break free.  As it is now, you don't really have much leverage to rock them side to side.

That is one sweet boat!
