car/truck tires and rims for trailer??
« on: April 02, 2016, 01:22:11 PM »
Ok so my trailer could use new tires and rims. Rims are galvanized, nothing fancy at all. So would I be able to get rims and tires from a sm truck or car that runs 13 in and put them on the trailer?

Guess you could but why?

Trailer tires and rims are different from truck/auto tires/rims due to the load they carry. Trailer rims are narrower and the tires are constructed with much stiffer sidewalls. They're built that way to handle the loads and forces place on them because a trailer is not built like a car/truck. It doesn't have the suspension characteristics of a car, doesn't have (in many cases) brakes or turning ability. A trailer goes in the direction you tow it and the tire needs to react to those forces differently. That's why they are narrow and stiff.

I would stick with dedicated trailer tires and rims.

Just sayin'

Good luck. :thumright:

Thanks. After careful consideration and much thought, I think my conclusion will be to discuss the pros and cons with my financial advisor {aka, wife} since she did suggest buying the correct rims/tires but its so hard for me to justify the price. But if she says do it, I have to listen, darn her lol.

You can typically get the rim/tire set for less than $100 - decent car tires alone are usually more than that.

The wife is always right.  And in this case, she actually is right :thumleft:.
