With the benefit of a few extra years since this thread was started what do people think the minimum comfortable horsepower is for a 1981 222 CCP? i.e. 20 degree vee.

Well in 84, the standard rigging was with a 185hp Jonnyrude. It seems if I remember correctly, 200hp is/was a very popular choice among members. In the two stroke mode it was a nice balance of hp to weight ratio. I ran a 200 Evinrude on my 84 (replacing the original 185) and it was IMHO a nice fit. They were were rated at 245hp on the CG capacity plate.

80/81 Specs.


Rated 245 also.

I agree with you CB - 200/225 is a nice fit for a single on a 222CCP.  A pair of 115 two-strokes works nicely too - if you have the model with the open transom or spashwell (pre-1981 all will take twins).  A pair of 4 strokes on the transom would likely be too much weight, but moving the batteries up under the console would help.   :2Cents:

I have come across a 2005 Yamaha F150 with low hours that looks good for the right price. Would it do the job do you think?

I feel a 150 would be plenty enough to get the boat up on a plane.  The fish camp we go to has a bunch of old AS boats (some with 3 digit serial #'s from the 60's) and the owner always puts 90-100 HP motors on them...plenty enough to get them up on a plane and they max out around 25 MPH.  You would probably be in the low 30's depending on the load you're carrying.  If i had it to do over again, I would do what is necessary to keep the weight down on the transom unless you're going to re-build a full transom...the Yamaha 4 strokes all weighed the same (2016 models) between...whether you go with a 150, 200 or 250 HP.  My old 235 Johnson weighed 400 pounds and the new 200 HP Yamaha weighs 489 pounds.  89 pounds doesn't seem like much but the outside chance of getting swamped if I come off the gas too quickly will always be in the back of my mind under the current configuration.  I would rather sacrifice peace of mind for speed.

Yes my gut feel is that it would be ok......(but that has got me into strife before)))) Hole shot matters nought to me. Cruising along quietly & efficiently at 22 knots does. I was wondering if anyone has had first hand experience with a 150 on a CCP 222? I'd seriously welcome any feedback. Thanks in advance.

So I bit the bullet on F150. The PO had it on a Wellcraft 232 which is some 1200lbs heavier than the 222 CCP and he reckons he cruised comfortably at 30 -32 mph. That'll do me.

I finally have the boat all ready to go, Hopefully next weekend i'll have some performance numbers.

But anyhow, it's a 250 HP Ficht and I have a 17P prop on it now.

It was way too rough to wring the boat out this past weekend, but what I am seeing so far is at 3400 rpm I am doing about 30-32 mph on the GPS.

This is with a crappy 19" aluminum prop that has seen better days.

This weekend, it should be much calmer and I will wring her out to wot to see what my max rpm is so that way I can get the right SS prop for the boat.

After looking at some data it seems like I am getting close to 2mph in rough sloppy seas with a decent amount of tab in to keep the bow down.

I know these boats came with 85 gallon tanks, but I think the previous owner replaced the tank with another one, so I have no idea how much fuel the boat holds. Which sort of sucks because I'll have to run with spare tanks offshore until I had a solid idea on how much she holds.

Is that WOT rpm? What kind of load? If so your rpms are too low for a DFI motor. You need to find out the optimum WOT rpms for that ficht. Too low and you will have carbon build up issues and high exhaust temperature which can burn up your exhaust housing etc.

Optimum Wot for a 250 ficht engine should be between 5500 and 6000 rpm.

yep way over propped.

That was 2 people and full fuel, trimmed out in some very light chop.

Also when I run in the slop, I need some more stern lift, So I'll find a SS prop that does that. I guess I'll start out at 17" and see what happens.
