Newbie with a 78 22.2 Aquasport Full Rebuild
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:21:42 PM »
Hello everyone just picked up a 1978 22.2 Aquasport. Been reading these forums and decided to join and get involved. Very excited about the rebuild even my wife is in on it. Came with a 2001 Mercury Optimax and a dual axle trailer. Motor had some parts stolen before I bought the boat. Cpu and the alternator for sure maybe another piece but has 650hrs on motor. Trailer has a nice frame just needs one new axle, springs and perches. Planing on doing the floor asap with waffle board and motor running first. Future plans will include removing the cap and leaving it off doing a pvc covered with fiberglass top edge for more fishing use.  Then raise the transom to side height.

Welcome aboard, Carlton!  Let the fun begin!

Interesting concept with removing the cap, but don't underestimate the structural reinforcement the cap adds to the hull.

The most important fact is your wife is on board then everything becomes easier. :thumright:  Good luck and enjoy your rebuild.

are you wanting to remove the cap so you have the lower profile lines of a 22-2... not the 22-2ccp.. I thought the ccp "cap" was integrated into the inner liner, making that impossible/unless you ended up with a single-walled gunwale and having to glass the floor directly to the gunwale.

This is true. One piece cap, liner sides, and deck.

Way before it's time. Built as quality boats are now. Three pieces on the build. Hull...stringer insert...then one-piece cap, liner, deck.

You have a deep vee CCP. Keep her as is, if for nothing else, the benefit of engineered freeboard. Although it doesn't draw much ....a CCP will go far offshore on a nice day. And the high freeboard is a big plus when grouper fishing...especially when it gets sloppy.

You'll have a bunch of money in a new gunnel re-do...and then you'll need to core the sides. If you do decide to try it...don't throw away any pieces/parts.  At least keep the original gunnel cap intact so you can take reverse measurements on the correct curvature.

JMHO...

Thanks for the welcome guys. I am just debating the rebuild. I would like a family/commercial fishing boat build. I might just redo the boat as is and go find another hull to build. Ill post some more pics in the next couple days.  Thanks for the insight on hull build being a one piece drop in liner.
