Inline scuppers.
« on: July 03, 2018, 04:41:12 PM »
New to my 02 161 Tournycat. Cockpit does not drain well and holds water. One of the exit hose leaks at thru hull fitting leaks several gallons into bilge in 30 min. Should I remove hose and inline scupper to service or replace ?  Pretty sure this original valve. Are they serviceable ? Or use T-M. Thanks

The 161 is a pretty cool and rare model. We have a couple members with that model. So you might have to figure this out yourself - post pics and we can help.  If you have thru-hulls leaking you definitely need to address that.  Do you have access to them?
Hopefully you can document this for the next person, with a lot of pics.  Upload the pics, don't attach them - no restrictions on the upload, file size restrictions on attachments.  See the instructions here to upload into your gallery. https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0

Removed cockpit drain hoses and just looking in the bilge area the thru hulls appear to be higher than the cockpit drains. Optical illusion? Plus the curve on the hoses IS higher than the TH.  Seems to me this would cause water to not drain completely out of cockpit. I have seen some cockpit drains with ball valves built in on the bilge side. Any advice ?

They're probably close to the same elevation but without actually measuring it may appear the thru hulls are higher. The old CCPs had a similar setup but visually it wasn't as apparent. Still, when in the water the deck would retain water at the drains. This was greater when there were several souls in the stern area or when launching on a steep ramp. Even with the deck drained, some water remained in the hose and could be seen when looking down the drain itself.

I used expandable plugs placed in the deck drains to prevent water entry when launching and when I got a decent amount on the deck say from diving (enter/exit) or a rain event, I would pull the plugs while underway and the water drained fine. Still, these are two completely different models and yours has a inline scupper/flap so....

It will be interesting to see if the deck drains better (while underway) now that you have cleaned the flaps. Perhaps they need replacement?

Good luck. :thumright:

Thanks RickK and Capt. Bob. Those valves in the scupperswill have to be replaced but I'm not sure with what. I really like the idea of plugging the drains.  I mostly freshwater fish and trailer or dock the boat. Would like to install drain for 1.5" hose that I could plug and remove for trips to the gulf . Any ideas ?

Get a pvc ball valve and put it into the hose that you show in your picture. Store your boat with the valve in the open position. Leave it open for saltwater operation and close it for fresh water operation. Pvc valves should last forever. I don't know which side of the flap valve to suggest where to place the ball valve but my gut feeling is between the flap and the transom. My 230 T-Cat has four flap valves, two on each side but they exit the side of the hull and there is a little sump where the water enters for the floor of the boat.
